Biliary strictures are uncommon and usually related to previous surgery. Occasionally they can be formed by repeated damage from gallstones. Most commonly they are treated through a special gastroscopy procedure called an ERCP, but if there is evidence of recurrent stones, then surgery may be an option.
Biliary cysts (choledochal cysts) are very rare but are of interest due to a probable risk of bile duct cancer. Depending on the location and type of biliary cyst, surgery may be an option to prevent the possibility of bile duct cancer.
