Gallbladder Cancer

Gallbladder cancer is an uncommon cancer, but has very few treatment options if it has spread away from the gallbladder. Most commonly, gallbladder cancer is detected only after the gallbladder is removed for gallstone disease, and is found incidentally by the pathology testing. In these cases, it may be that there is nothing further than needs to be done. However sometimes there may be benefit in performing a second operation to remove the tissue surrounding where the gallbladder sits, including part of the liver.

In patients where there is a suspicion of gallbladder cancer based on scans, options include keyhole surgery or open surgery depending on several factors. Gallbladder cancer surgery is highly specialised and should only be performed by HPB trained surgeons who can discuss the treatment options with you.
