Specialist HPB and General Surgeon
Russell regularly performs gastroscopy/endoscopy and colonoscopy to investigate symptoms such as abdominal pain, abdominal bloating and bleeding. These investigations are also performed as surveillance after a diagnosis of bowel cancer, Barrett’s oesophagus and other disorders. Russell is adept at performing biopsies and removing polyps to diagnose and prevent cancer, diagnose dietary malabsorption disorders such as coeliac disease and lactose intolerance, and other procedures such as haemorrhoid banding.
The procedure is usually done as a “day case” under sedation so you are asleep and have little awareness during the procedure. A flexible camera is inserted either via the mouth (gastroscopy/endoscopy) or anus (colonoscopy) and passed through to view the inside of the oesophagus/stomach/duodenum or colon/terminal ileum. Patients undergoing colonoscopy need to have a special diet for 2 days prior to their procedure and take bowel preparation the day prior to allow a clear view of the colon, otherwise changes to the colon wall may be missed.
Russell meets with patients straight after the procedure to give them results.
