Specialist HPB and General Surgeon
Mr Russell Hodgson is a general surgeon and HPB (gallbladder, liver, pancreas and bile duct) specialist. He completed his medical training in 2002 and his general surgery training at the start of 2013. He further specialised in HPB at Austin Health and in Leeds, UK.
Russell has developed skills in difficult and complex gallbladder, bile duct, liver and pancreas surgery, but still loves the variety that comes with general surgery. Russell also provides advice, investigation and follow-up surveillance where appropriate for liver and pancreatic lesions.
With a research background, Russell is a strong advocate for practicing evidence based medicine, including enhanced recovery, laparoscopic and minimally invasive surgery, and protocol led care – all of which have been shown to decrease morbidity and mortality, reduce time to return to work, and increase patient satisfaction.
Russell has completed a PhD in Xenotransplantation (transplantation between animal species). His project looked at preventing the rejection response, and hopefully his findings are part of the future answer to cures for diseases such as diabetes.
In his spare time, Russell enjoys spending time with his wife, 6 year old daughter and 2 year old son, although admits he struggles doing prep home schooling.
He has set up private practice at Warringal. Russell works in public at The Northern Hospital as a General and HPB surgeon and is also the lead for surgical research. He has an appointment at the Austin Hospital as an honorary HPB and liver transplant surgeon.
Russell is committed to providing an accessible, friendly and communicative service to his patients, with an emphasis on evidence based medicine and patient satisfaction.
